The latte macchiato

Latte macchiato is a great alternative to the classic coffee for breakfast. This drink consists of two layers: milk cream and espresso. At the bar it is usually served in a glass with a capacity of 250/300 ml. The glass tumbler reveals all the chemistry that exists in a glass of latte macchiato and its horizontal stratification of various colors blended together. This happens because the two liquids have different densities and temperatures and mix but never unite with each other.

What is the difference between cappuccino, latte macchiato and caffellatte?

Although these three drinks are made from the same ingredients they are very different from each other, let's see why:

  • Cappuccino is usually served in a medium-sized ceramic cup and consists of approximately 1/4 of an espresso into which frothed milk is poured.
  • In latte macchiato, on the other hand, the real protagonist is the milk with a quantity of coffee that does not exceed 20 cl. It is usually served in a tall glass.
  • Caffellatte has the same proportions as cappuccino and is served in the same cup, but unlike the latter, it does not contain foam.

How to make latte macchiato at home:

There are two ingredients you will need:

  • fresh whole milk to taste
  • 1 espresso

Start by whipping the milk very well, which should look like a shiny cream without bubbles. Pour the frothed milk into a tall glass and wait a few minutes for the milk to separate from the cream. In the meantime prepare a nice espresso coffee. The coffee should be placed in a small milk jug to make it easier to pour into the glass. Take care to always pour the coffee slowly into the same point, in this way a uniform layer of coffee will form immediately under the crema. Finally, you can drip a little coffee on the cream for decorative purposes, or if you want you can try your hand at "latte art" with some artistic drawing!
